Web 2.0 With a Conscience

We’re seeing more and more web sites with digg-like features appearing on the Internet. The popularity of digg has led to many web sites adding options for voting on posted messages.

One of them, dotherightthing.com (which went public last week), is set up as a watch dog for showing the effects of businesses on the world and humanity. The activities of companies are posted and rated by the web site’s users.

The results are displayed as a colourful drop image of sorts. A green colour with a positive number is a good thing (the darker the green the better). It shows approval as the company is making a positive impact with its business practices.

A company not doing so well will be depicted with a negative number and yellow colour. The colour changes to orange and then to red the more negative votes their actions bring.

Companies that consistently do the right thing will have high Social Performance Rankings. This is a public reward and pat on the back for making the world a better place.

The real purpose of a business should be to move mankind forward in a positive direction without harming the environment or its inhabitants. Hopefully, dotherightthing.com will be instrumental in helping business achieve this noble goal.
