FTP Problems With Internet Explorer 7

Version 6 of Internet Explorer had an easy to use FTP browser. All that you had to do was enter the FTP site in the address bar and then hit enter. You would get an error message and after this dialog box is closed, open the File menu and select Login As. Then enter your user name and password and you’ll be logged in to the FTP server.

With the new and improved Internet Explorer 7, there is no longer a Login As command in the File menu when trying to log into an FTP site. IE 7 can’t use FTP the same way that IE 6 could. To login to an FTP site, enter the site in the address bar and press Enter. You’ll get an error message saying that the page can’t be displayed. Open the View menu and select Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer. It will then run Windows Explorer and try to log you into the site. It should give an FTP Folder Error message. Press the OK button and open the File menu. Choose the Login As command and enter the account information to get in the FTP site.

An alternative way of using IE 7 is to directly open Windows Explorer and login to the FTP site. You can open Windows Explorer by right clicking on the Start button and selecting Explore, or hold the Windows key and press E. The Windows key is the one with a Windows logo that is typically between the Ctrl and Alt keys.

Another setting that needs to be on to use FTP is Enable folder view for FTP sites. In IE 7, go to Tools, select Internet Options, and open the Advanced tab. You will find this option in the Browsing category. Make sure it’s checked. Then FTP should work normally.
