Safari for Windows
Apple recently released Safari 3 for Windows. The software was originally written for OS X, but even that was a port of Konqueror from Linux.
Safari was never well received by the Mac community. Apple hoped that this would be the browser of choice after Microsoft discontinued Internet Explorer for the Mac. The only problem is that Mac users preferred Firefox. Its a much better browser than Safari.
So does Apple think that a Mac web browser will succeed with Windows users? Apparently they do.
In a recent press release, Steve Jobs believes the only alternative to Internet Explorer is Safari. The Apple CEO stated that “we think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari. Hundreds of millions of Windows users already use iTunes, and we look forward to turning them on to Safari’s superior browsing experience too.”
Jobs claims that Safari is twice as fast as Internet Explorer 7 and 1.6 times as fast as Firefox, but didn’t produce any evidence to prove these claims in his press release.
Safari 2 for Windows is a large download. It’s 110 MB in size versus 5 MB for Firefox. The latest version for Safari (version 3 beta) is down to 8 MB in size. I don’t know why the beta software is much smaller than its previous version.
After looking at Apple’s new web browser, I really don’t see anything special about it. Its just another browser. There isn’t any reason to use it or switch to it. So far, the only real alternative to Internet Explorer on Windows is Firefox, or Opera if you’re in Europe.

Safari on Windows is buggy, but one thing I like about it is the font rendering. Fonts are nice and bold. Makes me want to switch over to a Mac
So I use Safari in the evenings when checking my feeds.

The font rendering looks good on LCD monitors, but I find them to be fuzzy on CRT’s. That will be less of a problem as more people switch to LCD’s.
Have you ever considered using Thunderbird for reading RSS? I stopped using Outlook for this reason and also for it being able to read newsgroups.

Just curious, where can we find Safari 2 for Windows?

That’s a good question. I can’t find it anywhere on the Apple web site. They are only offering version 3 beta of Safari for Windows, but they do offer version 2 of it for the Mac.
