WordPress is a Winner

You know you made the right choice in blogging software when its voted as one of the top 100 web apps. WordPress came first in the Publishing category beating Blogger, Drupal, TypePad, and Vox in the Webware 100 Awards. This was a contest that took place over a 20 day period in May and June where 489,467 users voted for the top 10 web applications in 10 categories. Over 5,000 nominations were made and WordPress took the lead in its category.

The problem with the awards is that they don’t tell you which application is the winner in each category. I contacted Rafe Needleman (Editor at Large for WEBWARE.COM) regarding this, and he said that they are not publishing the results. A reason was given in the WEBWARE 100 WINNERS ANNOUNCED! page, but I think the reason was that there wasn’t a good representation of users who voted. There was a very large teen and tween group that participated which resulted in statistics that were strongly biased to what appeals to this generation. It doesn’t reflect what the money making decision makers consider important.

Overall, it was an interesting poll. I hope that next year’s contest includes a more representative sample of who is using these web applications. Perhaps better marketing would result in these users voting. I never heard of the contest until after it was over, and I’m a frequent reader of CNET News.com through RSS.
