WordPress 2.3.1

The latest version of WordPress was released 17 days ago, but I was hesitant in upgrading to it. When I tried upgrading to version 2.3 49 days ago, various plugins failed on my blog and I wasn’t able to post new content. I spent a couple of hours trying to make it work and ended up restoring my backup files and database to revert to version 2.2.2. Now, with it being a long weekend, I decided to give the latest version an attempt.

The upgrade went very smoothly. I had some problems with a theme that I was testing, but I downloaded the latest version of CoffeeSpot which was designed to work with WordPress 2.3. Everything worked perfectly, including the Related Posts plugin that gave me problems earlier.

While playing with the new theme, it provided the option of changing the header image. I replaced it with a photo of an island that we passed by on a ferry on the way to Victoria. It was definitely an improvement over coffee beans, but the predominately brown web site didn’t go well with the photo, so I changed the blog to use more blue colours. It wasn’t a very difficult task and the results look great.

With future WordPress upgrades, I won’t just overwrite files with the new ones anymore. Its a better idea to create a subdomain on your site and duplicate your blog there. Then you can try an upgrade and see what happens. You can also try an upgrade of your blog on your computer, but you’ll need to install a web server, PHP, and MySQL.
