Joomla 1.5 RC4 Released

The latest release candidate of Joomla 1.5 was released on December 19. The RC4 version was code named Karibu which is a Swahili word meaning nearby, close, close by, or at hand. The developers gave it this name because the stable version of Joomla 1.5 is almost ready to be released.
RC3 users should upgrade to this version because many bugs were fixed and the software is more stable. The procedure for upgrading is simple for experience users, as outlined in the Joomla site:
- Backup all files; backup your database.
- Delete all Joomla! core files, but leave any third-party extension files in place, including your configuration.php file.
- Upload/copy contents of RC4 package.
- Execute the MySQL commands to be found in /installation/sql/mysql/diff.sql to implement the necessary database changes.
- Delete the entire /installation directory.
Its important to run the diff.sql script at the end. I tried to doing this with phpMyAdmin but it failed to execute properly. Fortunately, SQLyog did it without problems.
The steps for upgrading will no doubt be confusing for the majority of Joomla users. This is not a user friendly way of updating software and it should be a more automated process. The Joomla team should look at how easy Microsoft has made it for upgrading software.
Joomla 1.5 RC4 does have some problems still. URL rewriting may not work properly with embedded in articles so this should be tested before making your site live. Its always a good idea testing upgrades on another server, or a subdomain on your live server.
