Problems Installing the DotNetNuke StarterKit
Posted by Johan Cyprich on 01 May 2008 | Tagged as: How To
I was trying to install the DotNetNuke StarterKit on a computer that had the Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition. All of the modules were able to get installed, except for the DotNetNuke Compiled Module which gave me the following error message.
Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist. The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio.
That’s not a very useful error message since it doesn’t specifically tell the name of the folder that its looking for and where it should be. I tried applying the Service Pack 1 for the Web Developer, but it didn’t make any difference in the DotNetNuke installation. I also tried resetting all settings in the Tools->Import and Export Settings Wizards in the Web Developer, but the errors continued.
The problem here is that Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition needs to be installed. The installer is trying to copy Module_Compiled_VB.zip to C:\Documents and Settings\Computer\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Basic. This folder will only exist if Visual Basic is on the computer. It also needs to be available with the professional edition of Visual Studio installation. Its better to do a full install than a partial one with the compilers you regularly use.
Once Visual Basic was installed, I was able to complete the StarterKit installation and create DotNetNuke web sites through Visual Web Developer.
