Apple Alienating Developers Again

Apple is very good at creating ads promoting Macs and attacking Windows, but they are terrible at keeping developers happy. Due to mismanagement at Apple, there will be no 64-bit version of the Adobe CS 4 suite (64-Bit Photoshop for Windows Only). Apple is again driving away developers for their iPhone platform.
Apple will reject software for their App Store if it has “limited functionality”, something which they have not clearly defined. An application that flips virtual coins was accepted, while an application that shows how cool you are was recently rejected.
Duplicate functionality is another reason that an app can get rejected. In other words, don’t write software that competes directly with Apple’s products.
Apple is also causing problems with book publishers. The Pragmatic Programmers canceled publication of iPhone SDK Development because of problems with Apple’s NDA.
How many more developers and book publishers will Apple annoy before they start looking for other ways to make money? In 2007, Microsoft reported that there were 1 billion computers running Windows. There are more Windows computer than cars in the world. I haven’t been able to find any stats on Macs but I estimate them to be in the 20-30 million range. Clearly, if you want to make money with software, Windows is the place to focus your efforts. Even iPhone sales are insignificant compared to the Windows market.
