3 Million WordPress Downloads

On November 13th, the download counter at WordPress showed its 3 millionth download. That is an incredible achievement and I have to ask myself, how does an application gain so much popularity? What does WordPress have that other blogs, many of them which are better and more advanced, do not have?

I think the one thing that this software has is the very large community, or tribe as Seth Godin would put it, behind it. A community or cult following is essential for any product to attain great success.

The trick is in building up the tribe for your software.
