How Much Money Should Programmers Make?

Writing software is difficult work and the efforts are typically not appreciated by those who have never written a line of source code. The survey from PayScale below shows the salaries from employed software developers. It is based on people with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and working in the US.

These numbers are what employees get paid. It would be interesting to see how much money these people were making for the companies that they work for.

I think I need a raise … you think showing this to the boss would be enough?

Realistically though, how much should an independent consultant be charging? If you runyour own business writing programs, what is a reasonable contract rate?

Many contract web developers in Vancouver charge $90/hr. This rate really depends on the region your working in. You couldn’t charge this in Bangalore. The best thing to do is contact local software and web developers so you can have an idea what businesses are willing to pay for these services.

Clients will pay depending on what its worth to them. The problem is there are a lot of self proclaimed web developers, that don’t know what they are doing. And educating a client to the differences can be difficult. They usually have to go through a few bad developers, before they are ready for someone that knows what they are doing.

Anyone can be a web developer these days and the problem is that those new to it charge much less than a qualified developer and will produce a far inferior product. Too often a good programmer and web developer aren’t appreciated with the abilities they have.
