Android SDK Market Share for May 2012

The following table is the current market share of the various Android SDK’s in use. Developing apps for API 7+ will encompass 99% of Android devices. The largest numbers of devices are running the Gingerbread SDK (64.4%), but a significant number (26.4%) is running API’s 7-8. So, the minimum API for Android development should be 7.

Desktop Operating System Market Share in October 2011

In spite of the great gains claimed by Apple with Mac OS X, Windows still has an overwhelming lead in desktop operating system market share, according to NETMARKETSHARE. The most used OS is Windows XP at 48%, which is higher than Windows 7 and Vista combined. OS X has a total market share of 5.5% and Linux is at 1.2%. Both OS X and Linux had very little gains on the desktop.

Windows XP is, however, decreasing in usage. It had a 57.6% market share in January 2011. Users are gradually migrating to Windows 7 and eventually Windows 8 when it is released. Windows 8 will be the dominant OS in about 2 years.

August 2011 Smart Phone Market Share

The following are the latest smart phone market share statistics from Nielsen. Android is well ahead of Apple, which isn’t unexpected since more companies have Android phones for sale than Apple. The WebOS market share is low due to a slow start, but I expect that they will have significant gains in the future due to the size and marketing potential of HP. Windows Phone 7 is widely believed to attain the #2 status (followed by iOS) by 2015 due to Microsoft’s partnership with Nokia and they have advantage of a vibrant developer community and great development tools (i.e. Visual Studio 2010).

Its interesting times ahead with smart phones. The competition from these major brands will only produce better products in the end for the consumer.

Android 39%
Apple iOS 28%
RIM Blackberry 20%
Windows Phone 7 9%
HP WebOS 2%
Symbian 2%

The HTML 5 Logo

The World Wide Web Consortium released a logo for the new HTML 5 standard. The purpose of doing this was to promote the new technology and their organization. The logo and variations of it can be found at the W3C HTML 5 Logo site.

The branding campaign from W3C is being done in hope that HTML5 will be widely used in not only creating web sites, but also desktop applications and streaming video. There are first person shooter games that have been ported to HTML5, so the possibilities of what can be accomplished are great.

It will be interesting to see how HTML5 competes against Flash and Silverlight.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 Update

Microsoft released the next version of its free anti-virus application, Microsoft Security Essentials. The software doesn’t tell you that a new version is available and you have to go to the site’s page to download it. Only a few news sources have reported this new update.

Version 2.0 integrates with Internet Explorer and Windows Firewall. If your firewall isn’t enabled, it will ask to turn it on. The new version has an improved anti-malware engine which Microsoft claims that it runs faster. The Internet Explorer integrations works only Vista and Windows 7 machines.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free for home users and business up to 10 users. I’ve been using for a few months now since I uninstalled the McAfee virus scanners. The software works just as well as its commercial counterparts. The only I would like to see is Microsoft updating Windows Firewall so that it can block outgoing traffic in addition to incoming.
